A gift for a very special mother-in-law

Size: 58" x 66" • Technique: Paper Piecing
Number of Blocks: 50 • Number of Pieces: 550 (center blocks only)
Time to Create: 85 hours & 40 minutes (from design conception to the last stitch)

In December of 2007 my mother-in-law had a stroke while having surgery.  I wanted my first project for the New Year to be for her.  As I stitched each block together I couldn't help but wonder about what she must be going through.  My aim was not only to create a quilt that she could curl up under on those cold Michigan winter nights, but also to remind her that someone in Kansas loved her.  She never did curl up under the quilt, instead she had me sew a sleeve on the back so she could hang it on the wall and look at whenever she wished.  The last time I saw her before she passed away she made sure that I knew that I was to take this quilt back home to Kansas.  Now every time I look at it I know that someone in Michigan loved me dearly.
